sustainable living
TURN is committed to designing responsibly when it comes to saving resources and being more energy efficient. We are a member of The Green Register and keep up to date with the latest developments, products and technology available to make our buildings more energy efficient and comfortable.
- The media, architectural profession and associated industries have been raising the profile for sustainable living. Many people are aware of the government's target to reduce our carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 and for all new homes to be zero carbon rated from 2016.
- However 90% of the domestic stock that we live in is old and lags far behind new buildings in energy efficiency. Strategies such as the Green Deal are beginning to address this but this is only a very small beginning and homeowners might still be caught out with unaffordable energy bills if they do not take initiative.
- The initial cost for microgeneration technology such as PVs is coming down and therefore pay-back time is getting shorter. Together with rising energy prices the balance is shifting and once the 'building envelope' has been addressed this should be considered.
- Replacing leaking single glazed windows is great but consideration should also be given to the way the new windows are built into the wall, the 'junctions' to avoid air leaking through these. Not everyone can afford to carry out a full retrofit of their property but do consider getting advice on where to spend your money wisely;
TURN has gained much experience in assisting and demonstrating to clients how best to upgrade their homes, make them more comfortable and save money on utilities without compromising design.
