retrofit
Retrofitting one's homes can be affordable and needn't be daunting. Small changes can make a big difference to one's carbon footprint and reduce one's living expenses at the same time - think 'passive' measures first. Here are some inexpensive proposals one can consider to include within one's overall refurbishment works:
- Insulate your ground floors and consider underfloor heating (non electric!) - this will hugely improve your comfort level and your utility bills;
- Insulate your loft if you have one -it's a bit like wearing a hat in winter - it keeps the heat in!
- Draughtproof or replace windows with double glazing (don't forget to include trickle vents to avoid internal condensation due to complete airtightness). Make sure the double glazing is a low-e type of glass and that the cavity between panes is argon filled and suitably wide enough.
- Consider external or internal insulation on your property - every little helps; note however that internal insulation requires careful detailing to avoid damage to your building; ask the experts;
- Draughtproof your front door and letterbox!
- Upgrade your boiler or at least have it serviced every year.
- Consider solar thermals that can generate hot water from solar energy and can work alongside your boiler. If you cannot afford to do this whilst changing your boiler make sure you select a system boiler than can be connected to solar thermals at a later date.
- If you have a south / west facing roof consider photovoltaic (pv) panels to generate electricity;
